Have a Christ-Like Attitude

The heart of the matter

positive-725842_1920Think about a specific time in your life when you had a really bad attitude.  Did the situation get better because of it?  Everything we say is directly connected to our attitude.  “…For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34

Jesus taught over and over again that our hearts are the center of the battles we face in life.  Whether it is hate, lust or anything else, the condition of our hearts or our attitudes will often determine the outcome of any situation we are involved in. “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” Matthew 15:19

Speak and act as Christ commands

It has become somewhat of a societal belief that we shouldn’t talk about politics.  When was the last time anything got better from not talking about it?  Stop letting society dictate what you talk about.  Avoiding conversations about politics doesn’t eliminate confrontation.  People fight about religion, sports, movies and just about anything else.  Jesus didn’t dismiss political discussion or avoid confrontation.  He perfected confrontation by speaking the truth in love.

Whatever the conversation, let your speech and actions glorify God.  Here are three things you can do to handle confrontation in a Christ-like manner.

  1. Be an active listener and do your best to understand the heart of the matter
  2. Be patient with your speech and wait for the Lord to speak to you before you speak
  3. Control your anger and don’t let your emotions get the best of you

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;” James 1:19

Attitude counts in every discussion

There is no better way to ruin your political exchange and your spiritual witness then by cursing, yelling, slandering, or lying. “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.” James 3:10

The better your attitude, the more you will find that people will be willing to listen to you.  Control your emotions and allow the Holy Spirit to work in you and speak through you.  “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galatians 5:22

Your body language, facial expressions and speech can have a positive or negative impact on another persons life depending on your attitude.  You never know what Christ will do in someone’s life when you speak the truth in love to them.  Your conversations with others can have eternal consequences, so your attitude matters.
